A Stroke of Insight- Experiencing Nirvana

Years ago, I read the inspiring story of Jill Bolte Taylor, a brain researcher who experienced a devastating stroke in her left hemisphere.

She had the unique perspective of being able to watch and study the brain functions of her left hemisphere shut down, leaving her in a state of pure being and pure awareness.

She was able to understand what was happening to her clinically, as an educated observer. What she found was a blissful state. Nirvana. Peace, complete and utter peace and expansiveness. She felt the oneness of the universe.  She also realized that she attained this state while in human form, and that it was possible. She had the drive to recover, and come back from Nirvana as a Bodhisattva and help the rest of us get there too.

If you have 20 minutes, please watch this video where she tells her story.  (You’ll have to copy and paste the link into your browser, sorry).

The energy she shares vividly took me to that same place of peace she experienced during her Stroke of Insight.

I am going to re-read her book, My Stroke of Insight right now.

It’s absolutely stunning to realize that we are not our left hemisphere’s daily chatter,  our details,  or our stream of consciousness babble that permeates our daily existence. We can step outside of this linear state and into everything.

Laughter Yoga- Hilarious!!!!

Lately I’ve been stressing a bit about some big life changes that are coming up for me.

After having a fantastic talk with my love, we decided to try to minimize the stresses as much as we could, by stepping back and not trying so hard. To surrender and allow life to flow joyfully, instead of trying to control and decide everything.

I am super grateful that just hours after making that intention, I attended a FUN(draiser) with some of the most amazing activities, with amazing people. Edmonton has such an intensely active and amazing community of awesomeness. I can’t quite describe it, but there are so many joyful people in this city who are all about getting together as a community, celebrating life with dance, music, laughter and silliness  who are also interested in manifesting change for the world.

The laughter yoga was hilarious. We started off playing a bunch of games in a circle… There were silly games involving sound effects, movement, dancing, yelling, clapping, singing and general goofiness. We even made laughter soup. Then we had some free form laughter when we were all warmed up. We sat on the ground, leaning back against two or three people and we just laughed. Other people’s laughs were enough to make us laugh. People shouted things out. We made sounds and faces and tickled each other. We laughed and laughed and laughed until we were spent.

The premise behind this crazy laughter is that laughing feels good and it’s good for you. It floods your system with happy endorphins, lowers blood pressure, while increasing circulation and general well being. Most importantly, it increases joy. It’s also a great way to blow off steam. It sounds strange to laugh on purpose, or without finding things really funny at first, but your body can’t tell the difference AND laughter begets laughter. Fake or forced laughs become real ones really quickly in a crowd of sillies.

I feel all happy and tingly from the endorphin rush hours later.

We ended the night with a Tibetan sound healing. Our facilitator bathed us in beautiful resonant gongs sounds that vibrated through our bodies and right into our souls. It was peaceful and I felt connected to the primordial ohm, the pure resonance of manifestation, where anything is possible and everything already is. It was beautiful.

This fundraiser was to send a friend of mine and his friend to an International Drum Circle facilitator conference in South Carolina. These men do fine work already and people are excited to see what will happen when they return! I can’t wait to attend more events like this.

I’ll leave you with the parting words of one of the attendees this evening.

Peace, love and nonsense!

New Years Intentions

The word resolutions is  loaded, mostly with perceptions of failure and broken promises. This year, rather than resolving to do anything, I am simply making a list of intentions.

What I intent to focus my attention on this year:

Love, Fun and Laughter

Love is the obvious one, for obvious reasons. Because it’s so obvious, I thought about omitting it, but I didn’t want to read my intentions later, and ask “Where is the love?”, hehe.   The Fun and Laughter – well, I don’t want to take life too seriously. I never have any fun when I do, and where is the fun in that?

Living Joyfully

I intent to live each moment with as much joy as I can, but when I can’t, I intent to allow myself to feel whatever else I’m feeling, to sit with it, hopefully understand it, and then let it go, and come back to joy.

Everyday I dance, I have a better day. As someone who loves and respects herself, I think I owe it to myself to try to have more better days, more often. I want to dance, or at least to move, every day. With my hoop, with tunes, or just grooving to the rhythm of the traffic going by – I need to move to feel free.

I have made sharing my light and love my life’s work, so sharing has to be included here. This year I intend to branch out – to share more in more ways. I want to share with my writing, with teaching, with my serving, with dancing and in as  many ways as I can, without over extending myself. The flip side of this, is allowing others opportunities to share their gifts with me, to really allow an exchange of energy, love, light, gifts and talents to happen to see what will happen.

I intend to focus on the important things in life, and allow myself to let go of extraneous things. I know what is important to me (Love, family, friends, food, wine, dance, laughter, conversations, nature, reading and writing all make the short list).  I tend to be interested in all things, and while that is great in so many ways, I think this will be the year I try to spend my  limited time, energy, attention and funds on the things that truly matter to me.

My Love

I am getting married this year to an amazing man.   Our relationship, wedding, honeymoon and marriage are taking center stage right now .. . It’s so easy to get carried away with the party. I intent to stay present and focused on what’s really important: The party! Just kidding. But seriously, I am excited to host an event dedicated exclusively to the celebration  of our love. I am so grateful for the opportunity, mostly cause I really do love a good party,  and because it  give me a chance to incorporates so many of the other things that I intend to focus on anyway. Love, fun, laughter,  living joy fully, sharing, dancing, and even simplicity.

May this next year be full of Love, Light, Laughter, Fun, Joy and Beauty!

All the best in 2011!

New Reality Transmission

An international group of physicists and mathematicians have created a movement called the New Reality transmission that aims to create peace on earth, through applied physics.

“…According to the most well-tested theory in Physics, Quantum Mechanics”, your consciousness changes reality. In this theory, the phenomenon known as the Collapse of the quantum wave function is what brings reality into existence. This is a fancy way of saying that one’s conscious  observation of small unseen waves actually causes those waves to “collapse into matter. In other words, conscious observation materializes particles into existence.”

We create our own reality, and through conscious intention we can change it.
On 11-11-10, at 11:11 pm EST, for 11 minutes- people will join together on the website or wherever they are to project their conscious intention to heal the world. To create peace.  To change the world.

This will happen for 11 days, and again on 1/11/11 and 11/11/11.

Please join us!

I’m so excited, I actually wept with joy reading the website. This is it folks. This is why we’re here, and what we’ve been waiting for. We’re creating a new reality for ourselves, where people understand we are the conscious creators of our lives. Fear, war, poverty, hate- they’ll all disappear and in their place- we’ll have love, joy and freedom!

Have Fun!

I have a fridge magnet that says, “If it’s not fun, you’re doing it wrong!”

I’ve been accused of being able to have fun at a funeral. What can I say, I’m Irish, we know how to turn a wake into a party! But seriously, I believe life shouldn’t be taken too seriously… Nor should you take me that seriously, so if you don’t agree, that’s all right, but it really is more fun to actively have fun!

You can include more fun in your life by doing more fun activities. I try to hoop, dance, play and be silly when I can. I have fun doing things like reading, cooking, walking, eating, chatting with friends, stumbling around the internet, etc.  But I also like to having fun during non traditionally fun activities, like working, cleaning, exercising. You know, things that can suck if you have your serious face on.

To have fun. you have to be present. If you’re thinking about something else, you’re not having fun. When you spend time in the moment, you can find the joy in it, and that’s where the fun comes in. Abandoning yourself to the present and enjoying it for what it is.

My intention this weekend is to have fun, while getting my sh*t done. I encourage you all to do the same.

Have fun with it!

Manifesting Awesome and Radiating Light

I’ve decided to be less specific when I’m manifesting things.

I know the universe has a better perspective than I do, so I’ve decided to surrender to it, and be less specific  more often. Rather than trying to manifest things like: more money, or better hours at work, I’ve started just placing my focused attention on manifesting awesomeness of any sort into my life.

In the mornings, I take some time to pray/set intention for the day and connect with my higher self and the universe. Really, it’s just me talking in my head, or out loud to whatever/whoever is listening, which focuses my energy at a particular vibration level. Then, things of the same vibrational energy will be attracted back to me.

It’s a lot of fun, not knowing exactly what is coming up, but knowing that awesome things lie ahead. In return for all the awesomeness, I know my job is simply to radiate as much light and love as I can back into the universe. This keeps my vibrational level high, which in turn attracts more of that awesomeness, and more love and light back towards me.  It’s an infinite loop that is continually creating more light, love and awesomeness, of which the world can never have enough!

Was Blind….

But I had laser surgery!!!!!!!

I’ve gone from being blind and helpless without my glasses or contacts to being able to see better than I ever imagined  without them in less than 24 hours.

I shouldn’t be on the computer for too long right now, so I’ll keep this brief.

Thank you thank thank you! Thank you to my surgeon, the fantastic staff at Laser MD (especially the guy who held my hands during the actual surgery), to my best friend and my love for taking such good care of me yesterday, to all my friends and family who were so excited for me, to everyone who wished me well and to the universe for existing and allowing it all to happen.

It’s still very surreal, and very amazing. I don’t think the full significance will sink in for a while, but I am so full of gratitude right now. Oh, also, I wanted to thank the laser of awesome for zapping me. Eximer laser, you rocked my world!

It’s going to be interesting to see how this will affect my life, in the day-to-day and at the spiritual level. I already find it empowering, to no longer be dependent on corrective lenses, or someone else to help me see. All I know so far is that it’s awesome to be able to see.

Cultivating Gratitude

I haven’t blogged much yet about gratitude, which is strange, because it’s something I think about all the time.  Actually, when I started actively cultivating gratitude in my life, my whole life changed. Something shifted and everything just became more wonderful, literally. I was full of wonder and awe at all the amazingness that life has to offer.

Gratitude is pretty much a standard part of any spiritual life or philosophy. You hear a lot about giving thanks, and being grateful for what you have. But how often do you really take a few minutes to feel gratitude for what is?

A few years ago, I started seeing number combination’s of 1, 2, 3’s and 0’s on the clock constantly. It seemed like I would just happen to glance at the clock at 1:23, 11:23, 11:32, 10:23, 10:32 and so on every day.  Morning and night. I felt like I was being guided to see those numbers, and I felt it might mean something. I couldn’t figure out what the meaning was (not that I looked that hard into it), so I just took it as a sign to take a moment out, and be grateful. Sometimes I would think of something specific, and other times it was just a general shout out, a ‘Thank you!’ to the universe.

As time went on, gratitude became such a habit, that I was feeling it at other times than when I looked at the clock or saw a number combination. I started feeling it more intensely as well, with every fiber of my being, a true gratefulness for absolutely everything.

I found out later that the numbers have several meanings, but basically they state that you are being guided, and your thoughts are manifesting, so keep your thoughts positive and your intentions of the highest order.

As I cultivated this gratitude, my thoughts naturally became more positive. You manifest what you think of, so as this happened,  more and more awesomeness manifested in my life.

And for that,  I am incredibly grateful.

The Power of Awesome

We all have the power of awesome within us, waiting to be unleashed.

We just need to be reminded of that.

Enter Barney Stinson,

Stage right,  ready to take on the world, and sleep with as many sluts as will have him- while wearing a magnificent suit.

Barney is character on the sitcom How I Met Your Mother,  played by Neil Patrick Harris. He is also one of the most important pop culture philosophers since The Beatles and Lisa Simpson.

Sure he’s a womanizing, self centered jerk who likes girls with daddy issues. But he’s also a good friend, and a man who knows how to  suit up and seize life by the balls and shake it.

Barney’s shared many nuggets of wisdom over the  5 seasons of the show, but it’s really his enthusiasm and his firm grasp of the power of his own mind as the deciding factor in his destiny that I love.

Barney’s wisest words : “When I get sad, I stop being sad and be awesome instead! True story!”

It’s The Secret, in a suit. Using the law of attraction by controlling your thoughts to shape your reality.

You can watch the clip here:

I’ve long known the power I have over my own mind, and that we choose what our mood will be. We can’t control outside circumstances, just how we react to them. But it’s hard to always practice that. Sometimes we need reminders.  In situations like these, it’s helpful to ask WWBD? (What would Barney do?).

A few weeks ago, I woke up after a crappy sleep, feeling angry and thinking it was going to be a terrible day. Then, I decided to be awesome instead. And I was, all day- even after 12 hours at work. I think it helped that I suited up when I walked in to work. There is just something powerful about wearing a tie.

When it comes to thinking WWBD?, sometimes the specific answers aren’t  going to be incredibly helpful in your particular situation. For instance, Barney’s reaction might be to “Suit up!” or to concoct an elaborate scheme to convince a girl that a future version of him has traveled back in time to tell her that she needs to sleep with present Barney so that he might save the world from global warming.

That’s ok. As with any role model, you really just need to concentrate on the most important part of their message.

So think, WWBD? next time you feel sad, then be awesome instead!
